Blog Post #1 - Hangin' Out

In our novel, we have two main characters: Mark and Bryon. These boys are more than just best friends, they consider each other to be like brothers. They are so close that Bryon even says Mark has a habit of reading his mind; they're always on the same page and they think just alike. Despite their closeness, we've discussed a few small differences we've noticed between the two. If you had to choose one of these boys to hang out with, which one would it be? Mark the thief or Bryon the hustler? Type your response as a comment below this post. In your response, give at least two examples from the book to justify your choice. What information have we been given in the text that leads you to make your choice? To help frame your answer, I have provided some sentence stems to get you started. Your answer does not need to look exactly like the frame below.

If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose ________ because he ________.
I know he is ________ because in the book he said/did/thought ________.
He also said/did/thought ________.

  1. If I was to be friends with one of the two of them, I would choose Mark, because he is a thief, but not only that; he is charismatic as Bryon says, and he can get away with anything. I like people who are clear-headed and strong, that have sad pasts that do not phase them: emotional turmoil is not necessarily a problem and will not be a factor in their decisions. I know he is strong and proud; he is stable and a charismatic person because he can get away with anything and has such a sad story and past, witnessing his mother and father kill each other in a practically suicidal matter at the age of nine. He also is level headed and clear minded: he is always making rational decisions based on hard facts instead of what he feels, he lets the fact form the decision and the emotion the opinion. He also is a strong and courageous person who will protect his own, whether or not they are blood: as they say later on in the book, "one for all and all for one" as a general rule in their gang, their clique.

    1. Very interesting choice Braden, but I'm really glad someone chose Mark. You have some good logic here, I understand Mark's appeal despite what we know about his character. The only thing I'd want to see more of is specific text evidence. You mention a lot of things about him, like being clear-headed and rational, but don't offer an example to support that. You have text evidence for his upsetting past, his parents' deaths, but I want to see at least one other example that backs up your other statements.

    2. Before I begin, I'd like to say I read ahead and finished the book, and I will be citing evidence from chapters we have not read yet.

"Nothing bad ever happened to him? Then I knew what he meant; those things hadn't left a mark on him, because he was Mark the lion, Mark different from other people. Beautiful Mark, who didn't care about anybody; except me." Page 113

"Even if you do know it all, you don't have to let them know that." Mark on his attitude about getting a job. Page 90.

If you would like me to elaborate further and provide further citations, I will; just ask.

  2. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he seems nice and wouldn't get in trouble when you are around him unlike Mark. I know he is kinda of a good person because in the book he thought about what M&M said about being hypocritical when they saved M&M but right after wanted to beat up on a black dude. He also is changing his behavior as we go further in the book, like his mood about jumping people unlike Marks.

    1. Nice specific examples from the text, Tatum; it helps support your thoughts about his changing behavior. What else can we pull from the book to support your choice? Does Bryon really seem nice? Remember, his thoughts on M&M's rant were only for a brief moment before he ran back to catch up with Mark. Do you think it will be enough for him to really change his ways? Just some things to think about!

  3. If I had to hang out with one of the boys,I would choose Bryon because he seems like a better friend to be around. He seems to be able to stay in control of his feelings and would be someone to talk to. He would also tell you exactly what's on his mind, for example, he said "Girls crying bores me," to Mike after his story. He also seems like more of a charmer pertaining to when the book calls him a "hustler" so his actions would be fun to watch. I think Byron would also just slightly be a better role model than Mark because he can tell right from wrong, while Mark can't, for example, Byron says Mark sees no problem in stealing and that could lead to bad mistakes further in life.

    1. Excellent text evidence to support your thoughts on Bryon's character, Joey; you pull some great examples to show Bryon's character. I find it interesting that you choose to see his comment about being bored by girls crying as a positive-- that he's honest and tells it like it is. It's a unique perspective and I think you're really trying to see some good in him. Remember though, that he himself has admitted to us that he's a liar. Do you think that matters? Or do you think it's only to girls or people he's trying to hustle that he lies to? Just some things to think about!

  4. If I had to hang out with one of the two boys I would choose Bryon. I think Bryon seems to be the nicer of the two boys. In the book when M&M said that the boys were hypocrites Mark didn't care but Bryon thought about it for a brief second. I would also want to hang out with Bryon because he doesn't seem like he would get into as much trouble as mark. Bryon doesn't steal that much, whereas Mark steals all the time, someday he will get caught and I wouldn't want to be hanging out with him when that day comes.

    1. Very nice text evidence Kya! I agree that Mark seems to be a bit more of a trouble maker-- I wouldn't want to be around him either!

  5. If I had to hang out with one of the two boys, I would choose Bryon because he doesn't know how to treat people right (especially girls). He's a player because he goes from girl to girl, not caring about their feelings. He also is a hypocrite because he was going to beat up somebody (different from themselves) right after saving M&M (different from themselves). I would teach Bryon on the right way to treat people, including women. Maybe I could smack some sense into him (I wouldn't literally smack him, but you get the point).

    1. I was so confused when I first started reading this because you said you'd choose Bryon, but then started listing terrible things about him! It's a very interesting perspective to take, wanting to help him become a better person. I like your view on this, nice job Krista.

  6. If I had to hang out with one of the two boys, I would choose Bryon. I would choose Bryon because he seems to care more about his friends and he seems to be nicer than Mark. In the book when M&M calls them hypocrites Bryon thinks about for a moment but Mark doesn't. Mark also likes to steal, rob and hot wire cars while Bryon does not. Overall Bryon would make a better friend and a better role model.

    1. This is true, Bryon doesn't steal and has a brief moment of consideration, but is it enough? His moment of contemplation is very short and he immediately returns to running to catch up with Mark, saying he's his best friend and he loves him like a brother. Also keep in mind that Bryon is a liar and is just as violent and selfish as Mark. Just some things to consider!

  7. If I had to hang out with one of the boys I would hang out with the boys, I would choose Bryon.I would choose Bryon because he has that small sliver of good in him. Although he is reckless about his actions he is not as reckless as mark. Mark does not care what about the laws and rules, he likes to steal for example. Whereas Bryon knows stealing is wrong. Overall Bryon just has a better personality.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I like that you only refer to his good side as being a "small sliver," because that's about all it is. He's equally as violent and selfish as Mark is and he's admitted he's a liar. Can you expand on this any? What's something specific in the book that happens that leads you to think he's less reckless? Or has a better personality?

  8. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because is more nice than Mark. In the book, he likes to hustle and beat up people, but he is not that dangerous as Mark. Mark likes to steal but Bryon does not steal that much. I would have Mark as a friend rather than having Mark as a friend.

    ReplyDelete

    1. What specifically in the book leads you to think he is less dangerous than Mark? Less dangerous how? They both are violent and selfish, and true Mark steals, but Bryon is a liar. Another piece of specific text evidence would strengthen your argument for Bryon.

  9. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he is nicer than mark.
I know he is nice because in the book he understood mike still liked black people after they bet mike up.
He also did not bet up the one guy that they found after they fought the people who bet up M&M.

  10. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he listens to everyone and has many emotions. I know he is a good person on the inside because in the book he always acts like a big tough guy, but when he experiences or hears about something sad he really takes the time to think about it. He also tries to make sure Mark doesn't get into trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  11. If I were to hang out with one of the guys, I would hang out with Bryon. Although they both don't make the best choices, Bryon seems like the better friend. He will always take time to think about what you are saying to him. Like when M&M told him he shouldn't beat up people who are different, because M&M just got beat up for being different. He actually thought about that and didn't end up beating the people up. I think Bryon is just a more caring person in general, and that is what I would look for in a friend. When he was talking to Mike, he was also understanding why he didn't still hate the group of people who beat him up and landed him in the hospital. I think he is becoming more mature.

  12. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Mark because he can get away with anything. I know this because he has never got caught stealing or hot wiring cars. Bryon also tells us at the beginning that Mark can get away with anything.

  13. If I had to choose one of the two to be friends with, I would choose Bryon. Neither one of them would be someone I would want hang out with, but Bryon is just a better person. He seems to be more considerate than Mark. For example, when M&M got saved from being beat up by Bryon and Mark he told them not to be hypocrites and mug the black guy. Bryon listens to M&M and doesn't mug the guy, while Mark doesn't even consider what M&M said. Second, Mark would make a better friend because he is more caring than Mark. Mark just goes around stealing stuff whenever he wants, but Bryon doesn't because he knows it is wrong. Like I said, neither one of them seems like someone I would hang around, but if I had to choose one I would choose Bryon.

  14. If I had to hangout with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he seems more of my type of friend.I know he is a hustler because in the book he told us.He also said he knew what he was doing was wrong.

  15. If I had to hangout with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he seems to have more of a conciseness that Mark. For instance, he felt bad when he thought about jumping someone because they were different from him. This shows me that he is starting to mature and learn right from wrong. Not only this, but Bryon would be the better friend because he is the better listener. For example, while he was listening to Mike's story, he said that he enjoyed hearing about other people's lives. This would make Bryon easy to talk to and get along with because he would always listen to you.

And Bryon would be the better friend because he is a better listener. For example, while he was listening to Mike's story, he said that he enjoyed hearing about people's lives. So that would make Bryon easy to talk to and get along with because he would always listen to you. So that is why I would choose Bryon to be the better person to hangout with.

    1. If I had to hang out with either boys I would hang out with Mark. He is the one that causes more trouble sure, but they both get in trouble a lot. They both get in trouble so I think of it as why not just do something crazier because you would probably get in trouble no matter what. I also don't like liars that much, and Bryon is a liar but Mark is brutally honest.

  17. If I had to hangout with one of the boys, I would choose Bryan because he is a hustler and he would be giving me some money and he seems like my kind of friend. Also I know he is a good person because in the book he acts sweet and nice to people, He also acts really nice to girls and he seems like a good friend.

  18. If I had to choose a friend to hangout with between Mark and Bryon I would choose Bryon.. I would choose Bryon because he seems like the nicest. Although he also makes bad choices, their not as bad as Marks and he regrets them. He seems like a good listener and he also expresses emotions better. Mark is the kind of person that enjoys stealing from people, hot wiring cars, etc and hes careless. Bryon doesn't enjoy doing that stuff. This is why I would choose Bryon to hangout with over Mark.

  19. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he seems like a smart and nice guy compared to Mark who is just a Thief and will get away with anything like nearly anything.
I know he is a hustler because in the book he said that he is a hustler but he does not really like what he does all the time.
He also said that if he were Mike that he would also understand why the group of black people would beat him and he wouldn't hate them while Mark said that he would hate them a lot and would want to go beat them up.

  20. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he seems to care more about people than Mark. When Mark is curious about something it is about things or ideas not people.
I know he is not a good person because in the book he does a bunch of bad things and hangs out with bad people.
He also likes to jump and hustle people which aren't good things. Another reason I would rather hang out with Bryon would be because I feel like if Mark came over he might steal something. Sure Bryon is a liar but he thinks stealing is wrong so I don't think he would take anything.

  21. If I had to hangout with one of the boys I would pick to hangout with Bryon. I would pick Bryon because he can tell right from wrong unlike Mark. Also, Byron would most likely be a better friend and care about our friendship more than Mark would.

    ReplyDelete
  22. If I were to hang out with Mark or Bryon I would hand out with Bryon. I would pick him because he is starting to mature and realize what he is doing is wrong. This would be mean that he is becoming a better person and would be be a good friend who would know the difference between what is right and what is wrong. For example when Mark wanted to beat up the black kid Bryon said we shouldn't because he realized that it was wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  23. If I had to hangout with one of the boys I would choose Bryon because he is softer at heart. A reason from the book that I would want to hangout with him, is because he shot down Mark's idea of jumping the black man. That shows that he is starting to realize what they do is wrong. I would not want to hangout with someone like Mark, who actually likes jumping people. Another reason I would hangout with him is because he is starting to actually care about people. He enjoyed the story that Mike told him and he listened. I think that I could teach him and he could be a nice, caring person.

  24. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he does not steal things and seems to be maturing more than Mark. Therefore, he is not going to be doing all of the immature things that they used to do. I know he is maturing because in the book he said/did/thought when Mark said that if someone ever beat him up like they did to Mike, he would never forgive them, Bryon started to think about that more and more and what it meant. He also said/did/thought about what M&M said when they were going to beat up the balck kid because he was different, just after they rescued M&M.

  25. If I were to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon. I wouldn't want to hang out with a thief like Mark. One example from the book is how Bryon felt guilty after jumping that guy, and Mark didn't seem to care at all. Another is that Bryon has never gotten into serious trouble for his actions, unlike Mark who has been in jail before. Also Bryon just has a better conscious overall. I wouldn't want to be around someone as troublesome as Mark.

  26. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Mark because his personality is more congenial with my own. Now, I'm saying I steal things, it's more of who he is. Mark isn't one of those people that you want to mess with, but he will stand up for his friends and be there when you need him. Mark is a listener, as shown in Chapter 2 when he is carefully taking in everything the hippie Randy is saying. No matter what you are talking about, Mark is sure to listen in. He will give you his feedback on the topic. And that's something I look for in a friend. One bad thing about Mark is that he's not very mature. I could get used to that, but it's something that he needs to grow out of, like Bryon. Mark is seen as a thief, crook, a kid who hot-wires cars, but there is so much more to him than that. You have to look beneath the surface. That's why I would choose Mark to be the better person to hang out with

    ReplyDelete
  27. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because even though he seems mean, he is nicer than he looks. Unlike Bryon, Mark does not feel sympathy, even for Mike who was just almost beaten to death for being nice to a girl. Bryon felt bad and was understanding. Another instance is when the boys were about to jump a kid, but M&M said they shouldn't, and Bryon actually thought about what he said.

    ReplyDelete
  28. If I had to hang out with one of the boys I would pick Mark. Mark could help me at points. He is said to be able to get out of any situation, which could help me at times. He also seems to be un-effected by his past.He kinda ignores it and keeps on going, and that’s what I like about this character. He seems to know what he is doing and can most likely act calm in a rough situation.

    ReplyDelete
  29. If I had to hangout with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon. When M&M told them they were being hypocrites, Bryon at least thought about his actions for a split second, unlike Mark. Bryon at least thinks that stealing is the wrong thing to do. Yes, he plays girls, but I feel like I could change him for the better. If I hung around him, he'd see my actions, and hopefully change his. Also, at the hospital with Mike, Bryon gave a better reaction to the story.

    ReplyDelete
  30. If I had to hang out with one of the boys for a day, I would choose Bryon because I feel that he makes smarter decisions than Mark. For example, Bryon doesn't steal like it is a game, because he is smarter than that. I'm not saying that hustling is any good either, but Bryon technically isn't breaking any laws that can put him jail, and Mark is. Also, after M&M told the two boys to not jump somebody after they just saved him from being jumped, Bryon actually listened and respected M&M's words. Mark on the other hand wanted to jump the man anyway. This is why If I had to hang out with one of them for a day, it would be Bryon.

  31. If I had to chose one of the boys to hang out with, I would have to chose Bryon because as the book progresses, he shows that he can feel sympathy and guilt for actions he has done, while Mark is a go with the flow type of guy. While it might be more comfortable with Mark in the beginning because he's so carefree and can probably start a conversation and keep the awkwardness to a minimum, I would soon get annoyed that he doesn't feel the need to have at least a little bit of regret for some of his actions and decisions. Bryon on the other hand, is also carefree but not to the extent where he doesn't care what happens to other people because of his actions. Sure, he hustles people and takes their money unfairly, but Mark goes out and steals cars and items from stores and somehow gets away with it, just that alone irks me that he's barely had to face any repercussions for his actions. So if I were to hang out with him, he could do something to affect me and show no remorse towards it, but Bryon has the audacity to at least regret some of his bad decisions. So that's why I would hang out with Bryon rather than Mark.

  32. If I had to hangout with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon. I would choose him because I feel like I can trust him more. Also, Mark is a pickpocket and I wouldn't want him to steal my stuff. Plus, Bryon seems more understanding and considerate. I think it would be easier to talk to Bryon than Mark because Bryon is able to look at things from both sides of the story. In addition, Bryon listened to Mike tell a story and didn't interrupt or say that it was boring. Instead he agreed with Mike and understood the situation. That is why I would pick Bryon over Mark.

  33. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because I believe he takes mre care into his life and also others. I know he is loving because in the book he did everything he could to save Mark after he got beat up. He also did not want to steal anything or cheat people out of their money like Mark does, because Bryon knows it is wrong.

  34. Although I'd honestly be happy to hang out with either Mark or Bryon, if I HAD to chose one, I'd go with Mark. I say Mark because, since he isn't the one whose perspective this was written in, I don't really know what he's thinking or feeling. I'd like to know the kinds of things that go through his head and how he feels about certain topics. I also like to think that I could be his conscience and keep him from doing stupid things.

(I'd rather hang out with M&M, though, because he is the most like me.)

  35. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he has a more of a heart. Even though I rather choose neither because both of them are rude, Bryon realizes what he is doing for a split second is wrong. Bryon also seems like he would be more interested in what I have to say. When he is listening to Mike tell his story he is interested in it.

  36. If I had to hangout with one of the boys, I would choose Mark because he is a thief. It would be fun to steal a couple of things here and there. I know he is a thief because in the book Bryon pointed out he was a thief. He also pointed out that he hot wires cars all of the time.

  37. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose bryon because he is nice and a good person.
I know he is a nice and good person because in the book he said he regrets things he does bad.
He also said/did/thought he doesn't like getting chicks upset.

  38. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because in the book Bryon just seems like a better person. He's not a thief like Mark and he doesn't hot wire cars. He listens to what you have to say and won't be rude to you like Mark was when Mike told his story whereas Bryon listened and even agreed with Mike. I think he is a better person because he has a conscience and, even though he is a hustler, he knows what is right and what is wrong. He knows that stealing is wrong so, in the book, he makes a point to tell the reader that Mark is the thief not him. He is the hustler.

    ReplyDelete
  39. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he seems nicer and more aware than Mark. Mark doesn't realize how bad stealing is, he knows its against the law but he doesn't care and he doesn't stop himself. Bryon also seems like he is starting to mature because he felt bad about wanting to jump someone. If you hung out with Mark it seems like there is a greater chance of getting into trouble than if your with Bryon.

  40. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Mark because he seems like a challenge. I know he is a thief because in the book he stole cars and saw stealing as a simple thing. Bryon said that he saw stealing and buying the same thing, and that it not okay. I know that he is a good kid inside and he just needs to learn how to do things "correctly" according to society (and federal law). He also can get away with anything, which makes for a very interesting trait in a friend. I know this because Bryon blatantly tells us. If I could just talk to him and make him see that stealing and other things are wrong, then I feel like he would be a pretty good person. Also, Bryon is a hustler and I just don't have time for people like that.

  41. If had had two hang out with one of the two boys I would choose Mark. Why? While as stated in the book, Mark is a thief and gets away with everything. I think that hanging out with him would be interesting because of this. Mark is also strong and smart. These are good qualities in the person. Mark just does what he wants to do and does not care about other peoples opinion, and I admire that. But, the main reason I would hang out with Mark is because Bryon is a player and hustler. I do not like people that cheat into stuff. In fact, I would try my best to avoid him.

  42. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Byron because he seems to have better morals and isn’t always getting himself into trouble. I know he isn’t the perfect person and is really rude and degrading to people of the other sex or race. He also did some other bad things and rude, for example when he wouldn't go and talk to the hurt kid. Even know he is still a pretty bad dude he still seems like he wouldn't be as much of a threat to my safety and hopefully would get me in trouble from stealing like mark did. He also seems to have some moral when he feels bad for jumping the kids and wanting to do it to another person.

  43. If I had to hang out with one of the boys I would choose Mark. Bryon said in the beginning of the book that Mark can get away with anything. That way if anything happened we wouldn't get in trouble.

  44. If I had to hang out with one of the two boys, I would no doubt want to choose Bryon. I would choose Bryon because he sounds pretty chill. Like they said in the book he is good with girls and likes to play football (even though it's not the real thing). Not only that but because he obviously has more common sense than Mark. We have caught Bryon many times thinking many things over looking for the purpose or reason, where Mark on the other hand doesn't. He likes to think of things like stealing as part of a game.

  45. If I had to hangout with one of the boys, I would chose Bryon because he seems to understand that some of the stuff he is doing is wrong. What I mean by that is Bryon starts to feel bad when he is doing something wrong, where as Mark just does not think twice. for example after Mike tells Bryon and Mark his story Bryon understand Mike's point of view. Bryon starts to understand why Mike did not feel any hatred toward black people. Mark just thinks that Mike is stupid because they just beat him up and he still likes them. Another reason I would chose Bryon is because he seems to listen when someone tells him something. For example when M&M flips out at Mark and Bryon about jumping someone Bryon starts to think about why M&M did this and he doesn't end up jumping the black man.

  46. If I were to hang out with one of the guys, I would choose Bryon. He seems like he would be fun to hang out with and like a nice friend. The book says he listened to Mike's story and he likes listening to stories even if he doesn't really care about the topic. Bryon is a person that you could talk to about anything and trust. Also, it seems that he doesn't get in as much trouble as Mark and that is better even if he still gets in trouble.

  48. If I had to hang out with either Mark the thief or Byron the hustler, I would chose Mark the thief because, he is down to earth and I think it would be fun to hot wire a car and that is his specialty. I know he hot wire cars because the book said he hot wire cars, he is also down to earth because he is kind and loving (in some cases), I know this because in the end of a chapter he told Byron he loved him like a brother even though the are not brothers.

  49. In the book That Was Then, This is Now, the main characters have a strong relationship with each other. There is Bryon, the hustler and Mark the thief. They have some differences between them, but they are best friends and treat each other like brothers. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he seems more trustworthy and understandable than Mark. My first reason is because I think stealing is just wrong, but cheating people for money can be wrong too. The people though going against Bryon make a choice though and it’s their fault they made the deal or bet. I think that Bryon is better to hang out with is because in the book it shows that Bryon has good feelings toward things and Mark could just care less. Like example, when Mark and Bryon wanted to jumped a guy after they just saved M&M, Bryon felt guilty from what M&M said about beating up people because they are different. Also when Mike told his story, Bryon agreed with Mike for not hating the people that had beaten him up, but Mark said that he would hate the people forever if he was the one beaten up. Another reason why is because in the book it says that Mark can get away with things, but what happens if he is caught? What will probably happen is him going to jail or taken away from Bryon and put into the boy's’ home. Bryon seems to have smarter decisions as well and that’s why I would probably hang out with Bryon over Mark.

  50. If I had to hangout with one of the boys, it would be Byron. Unlike Mark Bryon stops and thinks. When M and M told him, he was being hypocritical,He took that in mind and it got him wondering. Also I know Bryon would be by my side during an accident. When Mark got hurt Byron was there in a second as soon as he found out.I feel Byron since he's a good listener is easier to get along with.

  51. If I had to hang out with one of they boys I would hang out with Bryon. Mark is very violent. Bryon seem like he is more caring and he is nice to girls. He was nice to the M&M's sister even though he did not remember her. So far in the chapters it look's like Bryon has a better personality.

  52. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he seems cool.
I know he is a hustler because in the book he said That his brother Mark is the thief and he is the hustler. .
    He also said/did/thought ________.

  53. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Mark because he seams more like me then Bryon.
I know he is good at listning because in the book he said/did/thought right away that he would go and talk to the boy across the hall.
He also said/did/thought did talk to Mark. He didn't just say he would and then not.

  54. If I had to hang out with someone I would hang out with Bryon because he seems like a nicer guy than Mark. Bryon seems funny to. I know he is a thoughtful person because he gets worried when Mark gets in trouble. Also he stands up for his friends.

  55. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he seems nicer and has more common sense.
I know he has some sympathy for people because in the book he stayed with mike and heard out his whole story. Mark seems more like the kind of guy who just does stuff and does not think. Bryon thinks sometimes and you can tell because he won't hate someone for ever if they beat him up. That is why I would rather hang out with Bryon.
    He also said/did/thought ________.

  56. If I had to hang out with one of the boys I would choose Bryon because he seems more mature. He has more sympathy than Mark does and seems to care more. He shows this in the hospital when they meet Mike and he listens throughout the whole thing and seems sincere unlike Mark. Also he seems more level headed. Instead of jumping right into conclusions he actually stops to think. He shows this when M&M calls them a hypocrite and instead of being quick to anger stops to think about what M&M said. I like people that act maturely and care for others feelings instead of quick tempered and more of a bully.

  57. If i hangout with one of the boys, it would be Bryan because Bryon is becoming more mature. An example of this is when Bryon listens to Mike's story and understands why Mike doesn't hate the people that beat him up. A reason i wouldn't want to hang out with Mark is that Mark would want to hot-wire a car and drive around, while Bryon would want to play pool (except i wouldn't bet).

  58. I would hang out with Mark. I would like to steal stuff and get it for free. I think he has a deeper thought process, like to think about he is going to steal the stuff. Bryon is just like, "Hey, that girl is cute, so let me ask her out." I don't like that thought process as much as Marks. He is the type of guy to get away with anything, so that could help him in the long run. Besides, if Bryon stops jumping people as we saw in the text as a foreshadowing, then he won't be as tough and strong, so everyone else will be able to jump him easily. Mark isn't like that.

  59. If I had to hangout with one of the boys, I would hang out with Mark. Mark can get away with anything, making everything we do seem risky and fun. Mark would be more fun to hang out with because he is less mature than Bryon, so he's a little more carefree. We could steal cool cars, food, and money to have fun. In the book, Mark steals cars or "borrows" cars to have fun.

  60. If I had to hangout with one of the boys, I would chose Mark because he can get away with anything and if one day he does gets caught, he can talk himself out of any trouble. Mark never has got caught stealing or hot wiring cars, and Bryon told us in the book that Mark can get away with anything. This would be nice cause if we did get in trouble or caught, he could get us out of trouble. So that is why I would chose Mark over Bryon to hang out with.

  61. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he seems to carry more thought in his actions. I know he inst the best when dating girls because in the book, he hops between girls quite a few times. He also is a meanie because wants to beat up people that are different from him. Bryon definitely has good and bad things about life.

  62. If I had to choose one of the boys to hang out with, I would choose Bryon. Unlike Mark, Bryon has a small sliver of good in him. Bryon thinks stealing is wrong, while Mark steals without a second thought. He seems to be more conscious about doing wrong than Mark. For example, when M&M scolded Mark and Bryon for wanting to jump a black man, Bryon was the one who had really thought about M&M's words. Mark simply shrugged it off and ran to go hustle someone. Bryon seems to have a little bit of a conscious, where as Mark doesn't even think twice about things like stealing or jumping people. That is why I would choose Bryon over Mark.

  63. If I had to choose one of the boys, to hangout with I would choose Bryon. I would choose him because he is a more friendly. I say this becasue when the greasers where beating up M&M it was Bryon's ideal to help. This shows he is a caring friend and is more mature then the rest of the boys.

  64. If I had to hangout with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he just seems to be a better friend and listener than Mark. For an instance in Chapter 1 he thought about jumping someone just because he is different than him and Mark, Saying this I think that he is starting to mature and realize that jumping or beating someone up just because they are different that you isn't right. The second reason why I chose Bryon over Mark is that he is a good listener. In fact in Chapter 2 he said that he liked to listen to people's stories. I think that we all just need someone to listen to us every once in awhile and Byron would probably like to listen to what I have to say about my past, present, and future. I understand that he is a hustler, lair, and just as stubborn/selfish as Mark is, I can really see good in his future and that hopefully he will mature into a better person.

  65. If I had to hang out with one of the boys,I would choose Bryon becasue he is not as crazy as Mark. I do not picture myself ever stealing and beating someone up as much as Mark does, so I feel he Bryon would understand me more. He says he does not like to beat people up and says its wrong just like M&M, which would probably be how I acted too.

  66. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would hang out with Bryon. I feel that Bryon seems to be more honest, just like Charlie said in the book. If I were to be friends with someone, I'd want them to be trustworthy. Although Bryon doesn't respect people very well, he could possibly change. I feel that the reason he acts the way he does is because of the people he hangs out with. I think deep down Bryon is a nice guy, who is not as heartless as he may appear.

    ReplyDelete

  68. I would most likely hangout with Bryon because he likes playing and I like playing pool. He is also more intelligent than I thing in my opinion just from what he says and thinks. Finally he also like enjoying listen to story's like I do so that is the reason I would hangout with Bryon.

  69. If I had to hang out with one of the boys it would by Bryon. Mostly because he seems more friendly then mark and less likely to beat me up. Also Mark does not know hes right from his wrong. I feel like Bryon would listen more and understand me were Mark would just not care.

  70. If I had to choose one, I'd choose Bryon because he seems like the better of two evils. Mark most likely would make me do something I wouldn't be comfortable with or he'd get into a fight that I'd have no idea what to do or how to stop it. For example, when Bryon was at the dance with Cathy, Mark got into a fight. Bryon left Cathy to go to him. This shows that Bryon knows his priorities and cares for important people in his life. On the other hand, Bryon is known for using girls. Bryon states that Mark is a thief and he is a hustler. I'd be scared to hang with Mark, knowing that he could potentially steal something, but I'd also be wary of Bryon. Besides, Bryon seems more open than Mark and he'd be easy to connect and talk with.

  71. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Mark because he doesn't like to mess around with girls like Bryon does. I know he is like this because the book states that "hustling" is Bryon's thing and stealing is Mark's. Also, Mark seems to have better judgement of girls, since he was able to predict how Angela would turn out and warn Bryon to stay away from her. Not to mention, Mark can get money practically whenever he wants to. I know this because Bryon says so in the book, after Mark promises to get the money for the charged drinks to Charlie. Now, his methods of getting this money might be a bit... ahem, immoral, but still... It wouldn't exactly hurt to have a friend like that, if you know what I'm saying.

  72. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he is nicer.
I know he is nicer because in the book he has given people mercy and has treated some people fairly, he acts with common sense when Mark does whatever he wants.
He also did not wan' to follow through with jumping the black man.

    1. I would want to hang out with Mark because hes very fun. I know he is fun because he likes to laugh a lot and he is very funny. He is a lot like me, minus all of the stealing and hustling. He just seems like a fun guy to be around and I wouldn't mind a little adventure every once in a while.

  73. If I had to hang out with one of the boys I would defiantly choose Bryon. I would choose Bryon because he think before his actions and understands the consequences. This is shown when Bryon contemplates in his head about what M&M said about jumping the black man, unlike Mark who ignored his comment. He also is more mature than Mark and he understands and takes account of others opinions and choices.

  74. I would hang out with Bryon, because he is a hustler, and I do not think that is illegal. Plus, Bryon has a nicer personality, and he is happier. Mark is a thief, and that is illegal. If I hung out with Mark, I would probably get in trouble if he got caught. But then again, in the book, it does say that he never gets caught.

  75. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would hang out with Mark. First, he isn't a user like Bryon is. Bryon calls himself a 'lady-killer' and says "Girls crying bores me." Second, Mark needs to learn that the world doesn't circle around him and Bryon and needs to care about other things than just himself and Bryon. In the book Bryon says that Mark can (and does) steal anything he wants and can get away with it, showing that Mark has no respect for the law. He also isn't saddened when Charlie dies, even though Bryon is shook up from it.

  76. I would choose Bryon. I would choose him because I don't think he would get in as much trouble as Mark would. I know this because he is always asking people to lend their cars rather than hot-wire some random person's car. He has some common sense in him that allows him to choose right from wrong.

  77. f I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he makes lots of money from hustling. I know he is a hustler because in the book it said he would trick people in pool by saying he's bad at pool, but he was actually really good. The book also said he hustles girls so he basically hustles people for a living.

  78. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he is more mature then mark is. I know he is a hustler because in the book he is said to be very good at pool and acts like he sucks. He also said that he is able to understand what is going on around him unlike Mark right now. Also I would pick Bryon because he is able to feel other peoples feelings. Second the people had said that he was very mature in the second half of the book.

  81. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he's a little more mature. Even though he said he's stolen a pack of cigarettes he knows that stealing is wrong. I feel like Mark would get on my nerves a little bit because he would always want to go do something wrong like he wanted to go beat up somebody after M&M got hurt.

  82. If I would need to choose one of the two it would mainly depend of the situation y'see mark is a much better trickster and swindler basically meaning he could get you what you when you want it and he could get you out of a tough spot with lying skills but he does have a long record with the police so if he gets caught you would most likely get caught as well. Bryon on the other hand would kinda be like a bodyguard type basically meaning he would protect in danger he would also take the fall for you if necessary but he also pretty reckless when he does get into fights and you would most likely be involved in one of his fights seeing how you close to him and such. So like I said it is very situational choice of which of the two friends I would pick Mark seeing how he could help me out a lot more than bryon could

  83. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Mark. I would choose Mark because he is adventurous and doesn't care about what he does. I know this because he steals things and doesn't get caught or care about it. He also has a strong personality.

  84. If I had to hang out with one of the boys, I would choose Bryon because he has more of a heart.

He also stood up for M&M when he was being jumped.
